Great news for Start-Ups in North Solihull


North Solihull Partnership has launched a new round of funding to help start-up businesses get off the ground.

The grant programme is designed for businesses that have been trading for less than two years and are based or operating in the North Solihull regeneration area.

Grants of upto £2,000 per applicant are available – community/social enterprises and privately owned ventures are eligible to apply.

The fund is managed by Solihull Council who are delighted with the impact it’s had so far. Kevin Kane-Brooks, Project Officer says: “We’ve seen with previous grant winners just how much can be achieved with relatively small amounts of start-up capital combined with access to business advice from the Community Enterprise for Success programme. We’re delighted to see it continue for another year.”

The Business Start-up Grants scheme is open until March 2016, with applications approved on a first come first served basis.

North Solihull Partnership Funding Opportunities

Socio-Economic Workstream Grants Programme Now Open

The Socio Economic Workstream (SEWS) is one of the groups which supports the delivery of the North Solihull Partnership. The SEWS focuses on how to deliver Social and Economic improvements across the North Solihull regeneration area. To aid the delivery of these improvements the workstream is responsible for a small pot of funding.

Main Grants Programme

Funded projects must improve the economic prospects of North Solihull residents

Previously funded projects have included:

  • A small grants programme for start up businesses in North Solihull
  • A programme of enterprise development to stimulate new business start ups in North Solihull
  • A project to maximise local (North Solihull) employment opportunities in large scale employment contracts
  • An enterprise project delivered with local schools
  • Apprenticeship schemes, including working with local VCS organisations

Projects funded should be able to demonstrate how the investment will deliver real and sustained change in North Solihull.

Please note: The funding is dependant on the approval of the North Solihull Partnership’s 2015/16 Plan, so no final decision, or endorsement of applications will be made until after this has occurred.


Academy for Young Engineers proposed for Chelmsley Wood

Public Consultation

A  public consultation has opened on plans to develop a second WMG Academy for Young Engineers in Chelmsley Wood.

The proposed new school will focus on engineering with science and is being supported by organisations including the University of Warwick, Solihull Council and a large number of local employers, including Jaguar Land Rover, Controls and Data Services, ARUP, Prodrive and Dassault Systemes.

The key employer partners will help to shape the curriculum and the project-based learning approach of the new Academy. Pupils will take a problem-solving, practical approach to learning by working on real-world problems, set by the employer partners.

The people and organisations involved in the development of the new Academy want to hear views about their plans from local employers, potential parents and students, the local community and other interested parties.

The Academy will be part of a new and exciting “learning campus” catering for 640 pupils, aged 14 to 19 from East Birmingham and Solihull. It is planned that the school will be located in a new building on land to the north of Chelmsley Road and to the south on Conway Road, Chelmsley Wood.

The Academy partners are keen to encourage employers, potential students and parents and other key stakeholders to respond to the consultation. Meetings with a range of key stakeholders are planned and there will also be a public meeting in the next few weeks. The consultation deadline is 5pm, Friday 30th November, 2014.

Chief Executive of the WMG Academy Trust, Dr Richard Hutchins said: “This is an important stage in the development of our second WMG Academy. We really want to hear the views of all sectors of the community. We have had an overwhelmingly positive response from employers, students and parents to our first WMG Academy in Coventry, which opened its doors last month. There is a clear desire from both local and global employers to find employable young people with both technical and business skills. They realise that they have a role to play within this, which starts within education.

“Our goal is to enable students from across Birmingham and Solihull to access to the same high-quality, innovative teaching we will be providing in the WMG Academy in Coventry; giving them the chance to gain technical qualifications alongside the national curriculum and gaining important business skills such as team-work, problem-solving and leadership.”

Birmingham & Solihull Wommens Aid are recruiting

Birmingham & Solihull Women’s Aid offers safe, temporary accommodation and a range of community based support services to women and children affected by domestic violence.  Applicants must have a commitment to quality, equality and valuing diversity.


Outreach Workers (full and part time posts) – £22,823 pro rata

To deliver case work and drop in support to women and children, living in the community, affected by domestic violence.  This role may include evening and weekend work


Referral & Assessment Workers – £22,823

To deliver a high quality initial response and assessment service to women and their children who are affected by domestic violence


Children & Family Worker (full and part time posts)  – £22,823 pro rata

To work with a team that delivers a comprehensive programme of play and family support services to children and their mums who are living in our refuges.  This role may include weekend and on call work

Birmingham and Solihull Womens Aid  are particularly keen to recruit staff who can speak community languages, particularly, South Asian languages. 

These posts are subject to a 6% pension contribution.  Women only need apply.  These posts are covered by a Genuine Occupational Requirement (Schedule 9; Equality Act 2010).
